COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A family is in mourning after a grandfather was killed during a fight for his granddaughter.
William Kevin Smith, 47, was beaten while in his front yard last week.
Christine Stott, Smith's fiancée, spoke to NBC 4's Ellie Merritt on Wednesday, remembering the man she'd loved for nearly 20 years.
"I know he loved me and I know I loved him," Stott said.
Smith came home to find almost a dozen kids on the front lawn of his northeast Columbus home, fighting with Stott's 13-year-old granddaughter. He stepped in to help her.
"He was hit in his right eye and then everybody is telling me they just picked him up and slammed him on the ground," Stott said.
Stott rushed to call 911, but it was too late. Smith's skull was fractured and he died at the hospital.
"He was an angel. He helped a lot of people. He helped my daughters when they didn't have any place to go. He helped strangers," Stott said.
Police said they have not made any arrests in the case.
"I want something done to them. I want them to be caught and if they do know who it is, I wish somebody would actually step up," Stott said.
