CLYDE, Ohio -- The former superintendent of a northwest Ohio school district has been indicted on charges he stole almost $300,000 in school money.
A Sandusky County grand jury indicted 44-year-old Todd Helms on Wednesday on 19 criminal counts, including theft in office, money laundering and tampering with records. Police arrested him at a friend's residence later in the day.
Authorities say Helms ordered repair parts, supplies, and services for the Clyde-Green Springs district from a phony firm beginning in 2005. He's accused of sending school district checks to the firm's bank account.
Helms resigned as superintendent in September. His attorney, Dean Henry, declined comment Wednesday on the indictment.
Helms is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Thursday.
