Police: Suspects Open Fire & Clerk Fights Back

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police initially thought both suspects out of an alleged carryout shootout ended up at a local hospital. That wasn't the case, though.

Instead, it seems two separate overnight shootings occurred on the city's East Side at about the same time and a mile apart.

NBC 4’s Tom Brockman reported with the FAST FACTS in this developing story.

The first shooting happened during an attempted carryout robbery and turned into a shootout between the suspect and an employee.

The incident began around midnight Thursday, a few hours after Sam’s Gas and Carryout at East 5th and Leonard avenues, closed for the day.

An employee of the carryout (who also is the owner's son) and his roommate came back to the store to get some groceries they forgot, according to the employee.

While inside, a man entered and asked if he could buy something.

Moments later, a second man entered and allegedly demanded money. When the employee turned away, one of the men allegedly began firing a weapon.

The employee shot back with his own firearm and sent the suspects running.

A short time later, one of the suspects walked into OSU Medical Center East with a gunshot wound in the torso.

The suspect was in stable condition and was charged for the crime.

Police initially thought they had both suspects out of the carryout incident because two men arrived at the same hospital with gunshot wounds at the same time.

The second suspect was not located, though.

Neither the employee or his roommate were hurt.

Around the same time and about a mile away, there was a second shooting, CPD said.

Apparently, there was a separate shooting at Greenway and Woodland avenues around 12:12 a.m., according to officials.

A man with a gunshot wound was driven to OSU Medical Center East.

The details surrounding that shooting remained unclear, but it was confirmed the victim was shot in the face.

He also was in stable condition.

The bullet-ridden car that transported the victim was parked in the hospital lot.

Both shootings remained under investigation.
