DELAWARE COUNTY, Ohio -- A National Highway Transportation Safety Administration report revealed highway deaths dropped to the lowest levels in five decades.
The drop was due to fewer drivers on roadways during these hard economic times plus tighter law enforcement to catch speeders and drunk drivers, the report said.
NBC 4's Matt Alvarez GOT ANSWERS on how the Ohio State Highway Patrol is keeping drivers safe.
Troopers have issued almost 8,000 citations already this year to Ohio motorists who were traveling 20 miles per hour over the speed limit.
Trooper Sean Carpenter recently caught two drivers who were going 50 miles an hour over the posted limit.
Carpenter made a traffic stop Monday during which a driver was clocked going 83 mph in a 65 on Interstate 71.
The driver received a citation and a fine of $155.
Carpenter said the patrol wants to hear from drivers who witness other aggressive drivers on the highway.
He suggested getting a license-plate number and vehicle description and calling 877-7-PATROL.
