Ohio Has An Official State Fruit

»  Comments | Post a Comment

WASHINGTON C.H., Ohio -- Through the persistence of some school students, Ohio now has an official state fruit: the tomato.

Students at Miami Trace Elementary in Washington Court House began a T-shirt and letter-writing campaign in the fall of 2005 after teacher Christina Schingledecker read about the orange being named the state fruit of Florida.

She decided the tomato was a good choice for Ohio since the state is a major producer of tomato products.

While many think of the tomato as a vegetable, botanists say it's actually a type of berry.

A bill finally passed last fall. Miami Trace students joined Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland for a ceremonial signing last week designating the tomato Ohio's fruit.

Washington Court House is about 40 miles southwest of Columbus.
