TAMPA -- A Tampa man who hit a friend in the head with a large hammer during an argument about beer last week has been charged with second-degree murder.
Deputies say the argument began when Luis Gonzalez-Puc, 26, wanted another beer and his friend wouldn't give him one, Hillsborough County deputies say.
Robert Lemagnes, 63, suffered serious head trauma and was taken to Tampa General Hospital, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. Lemagnes died Saturday.
Gonzalez-Puc, 26, was arrested at home. He initially was charged with attempted first-degree murder. On Saturday, the charge was upgraded to second-degree murder.
Lemagnes was found about 1:30 a.m. Thursday in front of a business near 31st Avenue South and 50th Street South in Palm River, Carter said.
Deputies brought in a canine unit to help search for Gonzalez-Puc, but a sergeant on scene tracked him down at his home at 4911 S. 31st Ave., the sheriff's office said. Gonzalez-Puc was arrested at 3:53 a.m.
A witness at the scene told investigators the fight was about beer.
A report doesn't say how many times Lemagnes was struck.
Gonzalez-Puc remains in Orient Road Jail today. His bail has not been set.
