COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With the economic downturn we keep hearing news that the health-care field is the place to find a job.
But there's another view: The recession is putting a burden on hospitals.
According to the Ohio Hospital Association, 35 percent of hospitals could be forced to layoff staff, maybe even in patient-care areas. And 42 percent of hospitals are on a hiring freeze.
"Quality of care won't be compromised as much as access to care will be," Ohio Hospital Association spokesperson Tiffany Himmelreich said. "Hospitals have been dealing with a workforce shortage for quite some time, and they're accustomed to figuring out a way to get around that.”
Himmelreich also said layoffs and hiring freezes make the health-care field seem unattractive, but people should keep these careers in mind for when the recession lifts.
If you question the care you receive at a hospital, Himmelreich said ask questions and speak to the consumer advocate at the hospital. Or you can do your own research online at www.ohanet.org.
