MCDOWELL, N.C. -- When Santa met Wendy Monday, their transaction was illegal.
Police have confiscated an obviously counterfeit $1 bill that was passed at Wendy's Monday afternoon. The picture of George Washington that usually appears in the center of the bill was instead replaced by a photo of Santa Claus.
Employees at the fast food restaurant on U.S. 70 West told Cpl. A.E. Honeycutt of the Marion Police Department that the customers who passed the money were working at a construction site across the street. The officer went there and spoke with the man who paid for lunch.
Honeycutt's police report stated that the man unknowingly obtained the bill at breakfast earlier in the day Monday and unknowingly passed it at Wendy's. He gave the restaurant a legitimate $1 bill to correct the mistake.
The phony money will be turned over to the U.S. Secret Service.
