FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- Meijer says the bugs found in organic dog toys sold by the retailer were North American moth caterpillars, not worms.
The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based company earlier this week pulled the "Save My Planet" pet toy from all of its nearly 200 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio after a customer said one was infested with worms.
Meijer spokesman Frank Guglielmi tells The Grand Rapids Press for a story Friday that the caterpillars did not appear to originate in China.
The newspaper and WZZM-TV report the infestation was limited to the Meijer store in Fruitport Township, about 28 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.
The bugs did spread to other products in the store's pet section. Those products also were taken from shelves.
