NEWARK, Ohio -- With the third lowest graduation in the state, there is a big push to get more students graduating in the Newark City School district.
For nearly 20 years, the Call To College program gets students ready for the next step in the education process.
In Newark High School, the program gives students a chance to stop by and talk to counselors and other experts on filling out paperwork, getting financial aid, applying for grants, and taking placement tests.
The program targets juniors in high school, and works closely with the graduating seniors too.
The program doesn't stop when the students leave the high school campus. It also tracks progress once the student goes off to college.
The program is funded primarily through donations from the community, along with help from college programs. Many of the students end up at college campuses in Newark, but many have also landed at state and national schools as well.
Students who spoke with NBC 4 said the program is a lifesaver, saying it helps them get on track with the proper paperwork to take that next step, and to eliminate any negative stereotypes associated with a lower graduation rate in Newark.
In fact, they said they hope to be role models for students to stay in school, graduate, and get the help they need to take the next step in college.
