COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Providing accessible health care is the primary goal of a new community partnership grant to fund the community health network.
The funding will target uninsured Franklin County residents, specifically focusing on diabetes care and prevention and providing prenatal care.
Nearly $1 million will go toward helping Franklin County residents for preventative care -- even if they don't have the funds to do so.
Christy Caldwell started visiting the John Maloney Health Center on the city's south side before she had her daughter to receive prenatal care.
"They offered parenting classes, helped me out, told me about babies, how to take care of them," she said.
That's one of the initiatives the Franklin County commissioners and other community leaders are targeting with the funding approved on Tuesday -- along with diabetes care.
"We want people with diabetes to get tested so they'll know how to manage their disease, keep their costs down, better quality of life," said Franklin County Commissioner Paula Brooks.
Brooks said the money will go toward hiring more physicians, practitioners and nurses to get more people in to get tested for diabetes and educated about their health.
