COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In politics, there is a simple rule: follow the money.
In the race to replace Sen. George Voinovich, a clear idea is emerging of who will lead the way for both parties, NBC 4 reported.
Based on new numbers released by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, she has raised more than $200,000 from 500 contributors in her bid to replace Voinovich, who announced his retirement in January.
Brunner has received the backing of Caroline Kennedy. However, her challenger is offering stiff competition.
Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher has reported about $1 million.
Fisher also won Gov. Ted Strickland's endorsement.
The leader in the race so far -- Republican Rob Portman's campaign is reporting raising $1.7 million last quarter -- with $3 million already in the bank.
The former congressman served as a President George W. Bush budget director.
Reports verifying the candidates' self-reported figures were due to the federal election commission on Wednesday.
