Residents Have 3 Yard-Waste Options

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Nobody wants to pay extra money for city crews to pick up yard waste, but in these difficult economic times, it's one of a few options city residents have.

Residents have three options when disposing of yard waste: purchase a subscription with Rumpke, compost it yourself or haul it to one of the city's nine compost facilities.

The city has set aside $1 million to offset the cost of yard-waste collection.

Columbus households will have the opportunity to participate in a weekly yard-waste collection program operated by Rumpke of Ohio.

Residents will have the option of signing up for six months of service -- renewable for another six months -- or one year of service.

The six-month cost would be $49.50.

The charge will not be prorated. For example: Residents who opt to subscribe two months into the first six-month period will pay $49.50.

Subscribers will be able to set out as many as 15 bags, bundles or containers of yard waste for weekly collection.

Subscribers who want to set out more than 15 bags in any given week will be able to purchase $1 tags from Rumpke for each additional bag.

Here are some positives on composting: Returning grass clippings to the yard will keep grass healthy. Individual composting will reduce the need for fertilizer in gardens.

What about citizens who can't afford the subscription service and don't have room to compost in their own yards?

Mary Carran Webster with the city said residents will have to haul yard waste to one of the city's compost piles.

There are nine private composting facilities in the city that will take residential yard waste free of charge:

1. Com-Til, the city’s compost facility at 7000 Jackson Pike, Columbus, 614 645-3152. No grass clippings accepted.

Kurtz Bros. accepts leaves, grass clippings, small branches and holiday trees at these facilities:
2. 2850 Rohr Rd., Groveport, 614-491-0868
3. 6055-C Westerville Rd., Westerville, 614-882-0200
4. 6279 Houchard Rd., Dublin, 614-873-2000
5. 6747 Taylor Road S.W., 614-864-4004

Ohio Mulch accepts yard waste at these locations:
6. 4120 Roberts Rd., Columbus, 614-921-9330
7. 4665 Westerville Rd., Columbus, 614-891-3242
8. 1600 Universal Rd., Columbus, 614-445-4455
9. 537 Reynoldsburg-New Albany Rd., Blacklick, 614-863-0445
