GRANDVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio -- You'd have to be really hard-boiled not to like the story of the high-school sophomore in Grandview Heights who is steadily pecking along in his efforts to get his local council to OK a law that would allow people to keep hens in their yards as pets -- egg-laying pets.
Andy Smigelski told NBC 4's Mike Bowersock that home-laid eggs are fresher and more healthful than store-bought. But the city of Grandview still has some concerns, which Andy tried to answer at Thursday's meeting.
His mom is egging him on. She thinks it's great he's taken on this project.
Folks opposed to back-yard chickens know egg-zactly why. They think of them as farm animals, which most cities outlaw. But several Columbus families quietly raise hens -- not roosters -- in their back yards and like them as well as any domesticated animal.
Andy thinks chickens would better than dogs as home companions.
”In a smaller flock, I thought they’d be more personal and friendly, and they give back. Like dogs are great pets and they’re nice, but you really don’t want to eat anything that comes out of your dog.”
The safety committee that heard Andy's plan wants more time to think it over.
