HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. -- Harpers Ferry National Historical Park kicks off its commemoration of abolitionist John Brown's infamous October 1859 raid this weekend.
The park is opening an exhibit about John Cook, who helped Brown in his failed raid on the Union arsenal. The raid was designed to inspire a slave uprising but ended with Brown's capture, trial and hanging.
Cook escaped but was captured in nearby Chambersburg, Pa., and eventually hanged.
Historians say the raid hastened the Civil War by forcing people to choose sides over slavery.
Saturday, the park presents "A Prelude to History: The Wedding of Virginia Kennedy," focusing on Cook's marriage. There will also be family and youth activities.
