TOLEDO, Ohio -- A county lawmaker running for mayor of Toledo says the city should have trash collectors watch out for crime if scores of police officers are laid off.
Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop says the people who pick up garbage have the whole city covered and could help keep eyes and ears on Toledo's streets.
Incumbent Mayor Carty Finkbeiner on Friday announced plans to cut 75 more police officers on top of 75 officers the city already planned to lay off. The city is grappling with a $20 million budget deficit.
The mayor has not said whether he will seek re-election to a fourth term.
