DUBLIN, Ohio -- A local suburb is looking to strengthening its social-host law in a move to prevent underage drinking.
The city of Dublin is considering changing the social-hosting ordinance.
Under the existing code, adults can't be charged unless they knowingly allow underage drinking.
Under the amended code, adults could be charged if they act negligently. The city says that's an easier case to prove.
The catalyst for change came from a grassroots effort by parent and student groups.
"It's OK to make choices for your family, but you shouldn't be able to make choices for other people's children," Cheryl Wiot president of P.E.R.C. says.
"Punishments would be a lot greater, I would think, for the parents and to realize that it's their responsibility, and they can't just turn the other way," Dublin Jerome senior Rick Travis says.
Dublin City Council will consider the changes on May 4.
If approved, the new law will take effect in June.
