UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -- For more than a decade, Upper Arlington city officials have tossed around numerous redevelopment plans to revamp the declining Kingsdale Shopping Center.
"It used to be great, but now it's dead," said Craig Dill, an Upper Arlington resident.
According to Upper Arlington officials, there have been 15 years of debate over what to do with the shopping center.
A brand-new Giant Eagle is in the works for the Kingsdale Shopping Center. The grocer could be installed in the center by 2010.
"I'm glad there's a solution … It sat empty for so long," said Virginia Dill, an area resident.
Additional office and retail space also is being looked at as the Upper Arlington city council unveiled the redevelopment plan in a Monday, April 20, meeting.
According to City Manager Virginia Barney, the Macy's store will stay in its current location, but the MCL restaurant will have a new location just behind its current location.
The property owner, Regency, is selling the land to Continental Real Estate -- a local developing company -- for $20 million. Continental will then spend another $15.7 million in construction. Once considerable construction is completed on the property, the City of Upper Arlington will then assist with $5.3 million.
"The $5.3 million is going to come from new revenues that we get from the site. We are not taking any money from any programs or projects. It's a win-win situation," Barney said.
