MIDDLETOWN, Ohio
A Tennessee company planning to construct a $340 million coke plant in southwest Ohio says permit issues could push the plant completion into 2011.
Ohio's Environmental Protection Agency gave Knoxville, Tenn.-based SunCoke Energy an air permit in January, but a Clean Air Act lawsuit has delayed construction of the Middletown plant.
SunCoke says it applied this month for a more stringent permit to remove any doubts that it can meet air quality requirements. SunCoke expects construction to take 15 to 18 months.
Ohio's AK Steel Corp. has contracted to buy coke and energy from SunCoke for 20 years and it's current coke contract expires at the end of this year. The steel company says it's looking for a supplier for the interim.
