CENTRAL OHIO -- Central Ohio Pontiac dealers say there's no need to worry about parts and service for your vehicle.
General Motors announced Monday it will cut 21,000 U.S. factory jobs by next year and phase out its Pontiac brand as part of a major restructuring effort needed to get more government aid.
Norm Adkins, a resident from New Albany, recently heard about the elimination of the manufacturing of Pontiac vehicles. He is the owner of a 1975 Pontiac Grandville Brohm and said he's sad to hear the brand that has been around since 1926 will be gone.
"Well, I have taken (my car) to several shows and won trophies and it's got a 455 engine in it. It's one of the biggest," Adkins said.
According to a mechanic at one of the local dealerships, GM will make parts for the Pontiac make for 10 years after a model is discontinued.
Pontiac dealers also will continue to service your vehicle for the foreseeable future.
"I understand GM's dilemma. (They've) got to build stuff they can sell and make a little money. They say they can't to that on the Pontiac," said Dean Ray, of Bob Daniels Pontiac Buick GMC.
The job cuts and Pontiac elimination come amid growing economic concerns.
GM is living on $15.4 billion in government loans and faces a June 1, 2009, deadline to restructure and get more government money. If the restructuring doesn't satisfy the government, the company could go into bankruptcy protection.
