REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio -- A Reynoldsburg band director got notice Tuesday that his position will be eliminated should next week's levy request fail.
"I feel like I am being blackmailed," said Reynoldsburg mom Darlene Montgomery.
She is one of many parents of marching band students that are upset about the pending termination of the band director position.
Brian Stevens has held that job for 15 years.
Reynoldsburg needs to pass a 15.6-mill levy on May 5 in order to save 102 positions.
Assistant Superintendent Dan Hoffman said the school district is not trying to blackmail anyone.
"These second- and third-round notifications are required by state law. It is also written in the teacher contracts that these letters must go out. We give them this notice so they can find other positions in another school district," he said.
Hoffman said it will be hard to find a replacement for Stevens. The school system will have to find someone among the tenured teachers to take up that task.
Faced with few options in funding, the marching band could only survive if parents foot the entire bill.
