DAYTON, Ohio -- State leaders have spent more than $225,000 in the last two and a half years on items like tote bags and polo shirts to promote their offices and their names. A review of spending by Ohio's five elected office holders by the Dayton Daily News found purchases of refrigerator magnets, calendars, umbrellas, lip balm and other items. State Auditor Mary Taylor, a Republican who serves as the state's money watchdog, spent $57,816 since taking office in January 2007 on mouse pads, calendars, magnets and posters.
State Treasurer Kevin Boyce, a Democrat who was appointed seven months ago, spent more than $32,000 on promotional material, including water bottles, grocery bags and pencils. Attorney General Richard Cordray, a Democrat who won election even months ago, bought $8,824 worth of pens, letter openers and note pads.
