FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio -- With less than 24 hours to go before voters decide the fate of Issue 2, both opponents and proponents used Monday as an opportunity to “get-out-the-message.”
Issue 2 is the proposed South-Western City Schools property tax increase.
The 8.3-mill operating levy would last four years with homeowners paying an extra $254 in property taxes each year for every $100,000 of property value.
Residents voted down the proposed levy in May 2009.
About a dozen members of S.W.A.T. or South-Western Alternative To Taxes protested the proposed tax hike at City Hall Monday.
Protesters were holding signs and shouting, “No more taxes.”
At a small office on Columbus Street, levy proponents organized door-to-door campaigning in Grove City that will last through Monday night.
"We just want to make awareness of the upcoming levy, which is tomorrow and we want to make sure we get these people out to vote," said Dave Allman, a supporter.
But the request for money has failed before and some residents said they want it to fail again.
"We didn't have all these teacher's aides when I went to school," said Phyllis Corden, an area resident.
"They're forcing me out of my home because of the taxes," said Dennis Smith, an area resident.
"That means cut some administrators if you have to cut some salaries, unions need to step up and make some of these concessions. They have not made concessions in years," said Terry Jones, an area resident.
If the proposed levy were to fail, all high-school bussing will be cut. Walk zones will expand to 2 miles. All schools will be open one hour before classes start and one hour after classes end. There will be no evening activities in an effort to cut down on utility costs. The Kingston School and Harrisburg Elementary will close. The Alternative School will be housed at the South-Western Career Academy.
