COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio's auditor says a former northwest Ohio schools superintendent used "elaborate fraud schemes" to bilk his district out of nearly $300,000.
Auditor Mary Taylor on Tuesday said a special audit exposed fraud by former Clyde-Green Springs Superintendent Todd Helms.
Taylor says Helms created fake invoices totaling $110,000 from nonexistent companies, then submitted the bills to the school treasurer for payment. The district mailed the payments to a post office box owned by Helms, who deposited them into his personal accounts.
Taylor says Helms also conned six school booster programs out of nearly $162,000 by recommending they participate in a fictitious grant-matching program.
Helms has pleaded not guilty to 19 counts, including theft in office. His trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 3.
