PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Tired of scrambling for money, the Pickerington Library hopes voters approve operating funds in November.
The .75-mill levy has been three years in the making. And it comes at a time when the library is struggling financially.
After the state cut funding by $400,000, the independent library system was forced to make drastic cuts.
Staff members were let go in June and hours have been reduced to just 47 hours a week.
That's difficult for Brian Allen who uses the library five days a week.
"I am an author. And I write here. It's a good place to do research for my next book. The reduced hours have made that difficult," explained Allen.
The levy would generate about $830,000 a year, costing homeowners just $22.97 a year per $100,000 of assessed home value.
Library Executive Director Suellen Goldsberry says this is a win for the community.
"We have received so many positive comments. People stopping us and say we understand you need this. The rewards for this levy are limitless," Goldsberry said.
Goldsberry says they can improve and update their book collection, restore hours and even rehire a few staff members.
