COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A law enforcement labor organization has endorsed a November ballot issue that would amend the state constitution to allow casinos in Ohio's four largest cities.
The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio on Tuesday said it created the Cops for Casinos coalition because tough economic times are forcing communities to consider police layoffs.
FOP-Ohio Treasurer Mark Drum says the casino issue would give and estimated $651 million annual tax revenue to counties, major cities and school districts and provide about $13 million annually for law enforcement training.
FOP-Ohio last year opposed a proposal to put a casino in Clinton County and says that plan did not guarantee tax revenue for the state or address law enforcement concerns.
Proponents of the new proposal say it would create 34,000 jobs.
