CA Wildfires May Force More Evacuations

»  Comments | Post a Comment

DAVENPORT, Calif. - Officials in California are concerned that strong winds already fanning multiple wildfires will help start new ones and force even more evacuations.

A state of emergency is already in effect in Santa Cruz County, where the Lockheed Fire has blackened close to 8 square miles of remote mountain wilderness. Some 2,400 residents are under mandatory evacuation orders as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger prepares to visit the fire zone today.

The fire is threatening more than 1,000 homes and buildings but no injuries have been reported.

About 250 homes and ranches in canyons and ridges near a wildfire in the Los Padres National Forest are also under evacuation orders. That week-old fire has grown to nearly 108 square miles.

A wildfire north of Sacramento destroyed one home yesterday and forced the evacuation of about 60.
