AKRON, Ohio -- An animal rights group's protest drew about 40 people outside the court appearance of an Ohio pet store employee accused of drowning two injured rabbits.
Twenty-year-old Liz Carlisle of Ravenna in northeast Ohio was charged earlier this month with two counts of animal cruelty after she allegedly bragged on Facebook about drowning the animals.
She pleaded not guilty Monday.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says activists and supporters from the Akron area gathered outside Akron Municipal Court holding "Justice for Animals" posters.
The case led Petland Inc. to close the Akron store where Carlisle worked. The chain said the rabbits suffered "horrific mistreatment."
Carlisle declined comment after the hearing.
