Ohio Community Says No Thanks To Stimulus Money

»  Comments | Post a Comment

DOYLESTOWN, Ohio - An Ohio community says $48,000 in stimulus money for a new traffic signal came with too many requirements, so it's keeping stop signs at the intersection.

Doylestown has given the money back to the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study agency, which is overseeing federal stimulus projects in a part of northeast Ohio.

Mayor Terry Lindeman says his village decided it couldn't afford to take the funding. He says government guidelines would have required Doylestown to move lampposts at the downtown crossing, and the village also would have had to pay $12,000 for engineering fees.

Lindeman says he hopes Doylestown's decision helps other communities.

Regional transportation officials say the unused funds will go toward other local projects.
