TOLEDO, Ohio
A judge's ruling could force the federal government to change how it cuts off the fundraising of groups suspected of having ties to terrorists.
The ruling issued this week by a U.S. District judge in Ohio says the government violated the constitution by secretly freezing the assets of a Toledo charity suspected of having ties to the militant Islamic group Hamas. It could mean that the government will now need to obtain a warrant before it can put a hold on such funds.
The ruling is likely to be appealed.
The treasury department has used economic sanctions to shutdown groups in the U.S. and overseas. The American Civil Liberties Union has been critical of the tactics.
Officials at the charity have denied being connected to any terrorist group.
