COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A 20-year-old enclosed shopping mall a block from the Ohio Statehouse will be torn down this fall.
The Columbus Downtown Commission gave final approval Tuesday to the demolition of Columbus City Center beginning in late September or early October.
The shopping mall opened in August 1989 with more than 100 stores spread over 1.3 million square feet. It died a slow death amid competition from newer malls, and the doors were closed in March.
Commission Chairman Stephen Wittmann says the thought of tearing down a massive building that's relatively new makes him "kind of gag." But he says it's better than having a huge building sitting empty.
The plan is to replace City Center with a project that will include a park, shops, offices and housing.
