COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police are looking for a man who witnessed the crash and shooting involving a rape suspect from Los Angeles in Columbus this summer.
Abram Bynum was shot after a police pursuit that began on July 7 at about 4 p.m. at Beechwood and Main and continued onto Interstate 70 on the city's east side.
During the pursuit, Bynum crossed the median and collided head-on with a tanker truck.
When officers approached the suspect, he was still moving and appeared to be reaching for a weapon and was shot by police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said their investigation revealed that an unidentified man was driving eastbound on I-70, witnessed the chase and subsequent shooting.
The man was driving a white Ford -- possibly a Mustang. Police said he was possibly dressed in a green shirt and blue jeans.
He pulled off the road onto the left berm of I-70 east and parked his vehicle. He exited his vehicle and walked up to the scene prior to the shooting. Police said they believe the man was stopping to help with the accident.
Bynum died as a result of gunshot wounds to the hands, head and chest area.
Bynum is the suspected High Desert Rapist, who is believed to be responsible for a series of rapes in Los Angeles County from 2004 to 2007.
Bynum has not been linked to any rapes in Columbus, but DNA linked him to several rapes in Los Angeles.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 614-645-4036.
