OSU Safety Officials Prepare For Home Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- We’re now just a little more than a week away from the day many Ohio State football fans have been anxiously waiting for.

On Saturday, Sept. 5, tens of thousands of fans will pack Ohio Stadium to watch the Buckeyes take on Navy.

But before that happens, officials have the tall task of making sure everything's in place to keep those fans safe.

Ohio Stadium sits quiet now, but in a matter of days, the sleeping giant will awaken once again when the Buckeye Nation packs the ’Shoe to watch their team take the field against Navy.

All is just about ready. The lines on the field down below are painted, and windows for the skyboxes up top are squeaky clean.

“This event is looked upon as a national example for homeland security, safety and security matters and how we address those,” OSU Police Chief Paul Denton said.

He said security measures are in place.

“We do check and will conduct bag checks at St. John Arena for the Skull Sessions as well as the stadium gates,” he said.

There are certain items you won't be able to bring into Ohio Stadium. They include baby strollers, bags larger than 14x14 inches, chair-back seats, radios without headsets, televisions and banners.

Denton said all officers will be in communication with one another at all times.

“Law enforcement and medical services will remain consistent as in previous years and at the highest level.”

Of course, this year there are some new obstacles for fans to maneuver around on the way to and from the stadium. One of them is the construction project on state Route 315.

Officials with ODOT said all exit ramps from 315 southbound will be open, as will the Lane Avenue exit going northbound on S.R. 315.

University officials also said if you plan on leaving to the north after the game, you should park at the north end of the stadium and if you are planning on leaving southbound, park on the south side.

Give yourself twice the amount of time to get to the stadium, officials suggested.
