COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Locals said a dangerous problem in an East Side neighborhood turned fatal Tuesday night.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
A local man was killed in a crash in which witnesses said vehicles were street racing.
Timothy Hartman, 29, was killed when his Honda S2000 made contact with Jeffrey S. Henry’s Ford F150 pickup truck on South James Road near East Broad Street.
CPD said the two vehicles made contact for reasons unknown.
Both vehicles went off the road. Hartman’s struck a tree, and he was ejected from the vehicle. Hartman was pronounced dead at Grant Medical Center.
Henry was transported to Mount Carmel Medical Center East. He was treated and released.
Witnesses said two pickup trucks were racing down South James and it appeared Hartman was trying to get out of the way.
While CPD has not confirmed anyone was street racing at the time of the fatal crash, some residents said speeding and aggressive driving are big problems in the area.
“It's like the Indy 500 out here. They run like a 100 miles an hour out here every day. It's pretty bad,” resident Charles Bell said.
“I think they drive very fast and aggressive … ” resident Christy Benson said.
The speed limit on South James Road is 35 mph.
“They better take it easy because it's rough out here,” Bell said.
CPD has not charged anyone in connection with the fatal crash.
CPD did not confirm witness information and only named two vehicles.
It was the city's 38th fatal traffic crash of 2009, and Columbus police was continuing its investigation.
