CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Communities are facing budget problems in light of the struggling economy. Bridging the gap is a key focus for many local governments.
Income and sales tax increases are helping to keep some in the black, but one Central Ohio city might be getting some extra help in the form of parking tickets.
Chillicothe visitors and residents who once paid $75 for parking illegally in a handicapped spot will now pay $250 for the violation.
The fine increase seems to be working. Officials have had to write half as many tickets as usual.
Police are keeping a close eye on loading zones and fire lanes -- but that's not all.
With three and four lanes of traffic along East Main Street and Mt. Logan Elementary School nearby, police and schools are getting tough to make sure everyone follows the traffic pattern.
For school administrators, the start of school has been smooth, but they said it only takes one traffic jam to cause a problem.
