COLUMBUS, Ohio – The American Postal Workers Union held a protest because of cost-cutting measures being implemented by the US Postal Service. Union leaders say the workers are angry about the plans to close the Busch, Linden and Olde Town Post Offices. They also say the postal service is breaking their contract by moving forward with the plan to privatize dozens of jobs in Columbus.
Victor Dubina, a spokesperson for the postal service tells NBC 4, “no one loses a job with the postal service, and in this particular position, if they get moved to a lower level position, they still maintain their salary, they still keep a job.” On the other side of the debate, Mike Schmid, President of Columbus American Postal Workers Union says, “they’re demoting our veteran drivers, they’re privatizing 54 truck driving jobs and in the process they’re trampling on our veterans rights.” The move is scheduled to save $4.3 million.
