COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Central Ohio Transit Authority, The Ohio State University and Ohio Historical Society hosted "The Power of One," a statewide tribute to recognize Rosa Parks Day Tuesday.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
The tribute included a 9 a.m. community leaders reception and an 11 a.m. children's assembly at The Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St., Columbus.
On Jan. 13, 2006, Rosa Parks Day was signed into Ohio law.
Rosa Parks Day celebrates the contributions of a woman recognized for standing up for her rights and refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Ala., Dec. 1, 1955.
Her bravery sparked a major movement, the Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped earn her the designation of "mother of the modern Civil Rights Movement" in the United States.
Nearly 500 elementary school children from across Ohio participated in the statewide celebration at a morning assembly featuring keynote speaker and former U.S. District Court Judge, the Honorable Robert M. Duncan.
Judge Duncan is most noted for his landmark decision to desegregate Columbus Public Schools on March 8, 1977.
Students also received a special visit from Miss Beatrice "Bea" Black, portrayed by Ms. Annette Jefferson of Columbus, who talked about her experience on the bus with friend Mrs. Rosa Parks that revolutionary day in 1955 and as a young girl in a time of segregation.
