LANCASTER, Ohio -- A house was destroyed, and a fire chief said seven or eight dogs were killed in a Fairfield County house fire Wednesday morning.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
Greenfield Township fire plus additional crews from Fairfield and Perry counties were called to 5253 Brooks Road NW at about 6:30 a.m.
The house was involved fully when fire crews arrived.
The homeowners weren't home at the time of the fire, according to officials.
They arrived home while NBC 4 was at the scene.
Greenfield Township Fire Chief Terry said fire crews were able to rescue three of the family's pets. He said about seven or eight were killed in the fire.
He said 10 or 11 dogs were in one end of the house, near the garage.
The family is involved in animal rescue.
The home was destroyed completely by the flames, but the fire was contained to the home.
Morris said there weren't any hydrants in the area. Crews shuttled tankers in from all over the county.
Morris said the cause might have been mechanical equipment because the fire originated in the area of the furnace and the hot-water tank. He said the flames were so bad they likely will never know the exact cause.
The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the family.
No injuries were reported.
NBC 4 originally reported a witness saying nine dogs were killed in the house fire.
No more immediate information was available.
