COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security releases the following information on how to prepare for the high winds today in Central Ohio.
High winds pose a risk of property damage and power outages for the Central Ohio area today. The Franklin County EMA suggests the following during the windstorm: If you are cooking during the windstorm and the power goes out, turn off the stove and turn off natural gas appliances. If you have an electric garage door opener, locate and use the manual override if the power goes out. Motorists should use caution especially driving high-profile vehicles or driving near high-profile vehicles. Avoid downed power lines, utility poles and trees. Listen to the radio for emergency instructions if the need arises.
After the winds have subsided, evacuate damaged buildings; call 911 to report life-threatening emergencies only. If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound indoors, open windows and leave the building. Turn off the gas source and call the gas company. Do not use matches, candles, open flames or electric switches indoors. Monitor portable weather radios for instructions and provide assistance to neighbors, especially the elderly or disabled.
