CENTRAL OHIO -- Strong winds were sweeping through Central Ohio Wednesday and making driving on roads and highways a challenge for some.
NBC 4 got answers to help you navigate the roads while the wind is whipping.
It was especially challenging for those who drive some of the biggest vehicles on the roads: big rigs.
"It just hits you where you don't even know it," said Greg Stiles, a driver with 40 years experience.
He's headed to Cleveland from Georgia.
"What it does is it kind of moves you from lane to lane, and you gotta kind of watch so you don't run over somebody," he said.
Professional roofer Jeff Fowler said he had a difficult time driving his van from Mansfield to Delaware Wednesday morning.
"It's been heck. I got this van, and it's been blowing me all over the road," he said.
Fowler said he had his own close call with a big rig Wednesday morning on Interstate 71 southbound.
"It was a tanker, and the wind caught him. I was behind another semi, and you could see him fighting it. He about hit us."
Sergeant D.J. Smith with the Delaware post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said on days such as Wednesday, they expect their phone lines to light up.
"We actually see a lot of accidents," he said. "It's usually because of a down tree or limb or debris that comes from the roadway."
He also said accidents are caused by objects that fly off the back of tractor trailers. He said it's best to avoid driving next to them.
"If you're in an area lined by trees, watch for limbs. You have to assume any tree down in the roadway, there are probably some power lines or something like that that could be so be very careful driving around those," he said.
Or better yet, he suggested finding an alternate route.
If you're planning on hitting the roads, Smith said perhaps the best advice is doing what Stiles is.
"I'll just move slow," he said.
