COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With the holiday season approaching, many children have made their lists of must-have toys.
Finding the right toy for a child with developmental delays or disabilities, though, can be both challenging and expensive.
NBC 4 got answers for those who are purchasing presents for children with special needs.
OSU Medical Center's Toy & Technology Library is a resource for Central Ohio children with special needs, their families and professionals who serve them.
Much like your local lending library, families of children with special needs can borrow from a selection of more than 1,500 developmental, adapted toys, switches and low-tech communication for 30-day loan periods.
Families work with the child and therapists to identify appropriate toys, switches, low-tech communication devices, software and computer-access products to match the needs of the child.
The library modifies its toys so children can initiate and sustain play, learn cause/effect, control their environment, communicate with others and develop skills, according to the library's Web page.
Families can add large buttons, easy-to-see screens and more – whatever a child needs to ensure fun and development.
The library allows families to "test drive" toys that may be hard to find or expensive.
