COLUMBUS, Ohio -- City officials said they are planning to roll back on the parking meter increase that raised rates at downtown parking meters by 50 percent.
According to the mayor's office, Mayor Michael Coleman ordered the service director to defer the plan to increase rates for the time being while a task force has the opportunity to review the change and determine the best solution. An increase is still planned, but Coleman said he wants to make it clear he is open to options.
Parking two hours at a meter went from $1 to $1.50 in the cheapest zone and from $3 to $4.50 in the highest-price zone Downtown.
Many business owners are angry about the rate increase because they said it will kill business.
They argued the rate increase took them by surprise and that the director of public service kept them in the dark.
Columbus City Council addressed the issue at a meeting last week, where the public service director said that an advisory committee will conduct an impact study going forward. It will be comprised of business owners and city employees.
Lower fees will start immediately, but the task force will make a final decision on the amount of the decrease in the coming weeks.
