COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A vehicle and a female body were pulled out of a Northeast Side retention pond Thursday morning.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
Columbus fire was called to 5500 New Albany Rd. at about 8:10 a.m. on reports of a vehicle in a pond.
Fire crews sent a diver into the retention pond to check for the vehicle and a possible occupant.
Columbus Fire Battalion Chief David Whiting confirmed one person was found dead in the vehicle at the bottom of the pond. That was shortly before 9 a.m.
Rescue crews and a tow truck pulled the vehicle and body out of the retention pond at about 11:15 a.m.
The woman in the vehicle was not carrying an ID, which delayed the identification process.
She later was identified as 39-year-old Brenda F. Ronk of Johnstown.
The Franklin County coroner was to perform an autopsy Friday.
The vehicle likely was traveling northbound on New Albany Road at a high speed, according to on-scene authorities.
The road dead-ends, but the vehicle kept going, hit a ditch-type area and went airborne. The bumper was torn off, and the vehicle landed in the middle of the retention pond, on-scene authorities said.
"It appeared the car, probably, was at a high rate of speed. It took the bumper off before it entered the water. There was more debris floating on the water. There must have been a pretty good amount of speed before the car hit the water," CFD Chief Doug Smith said.
No more immediate information was available.
