RIPLEY, W.V. -- A Central Ohio family driving back to the Buckeye state from a trip to Florida were near Ripley, W.V. on Interstate 77 at mid afternoon Saturday when they stopped for traffic -- and didn't move again for more than six hours.
"We saw icy roads in Virginia," said Cynthia Taboer of Lancaster. "But the highway here is totally dry."
She called from the road to Columbus to ask if NBC 4 could find out what caused the 11-mile backup of traffic that had mired them for six hours.
NBC 4 found that a series of crashes -- major and minor -- had stopped traffic in its tracks as law enforcement tried to jockey resources among countless incidents.
People stuck near the Ohio family got out of their cars and tried to find out where the hangup was, talking among themselves and trying to get information.
The Lancaster family was stopped by traffic about 3 p.m. They moved ahead again at 9:30 p.m., telling us they were advised to "take it slow."
