A new study from Brown University finds that all hangovers are not created equal.
Researchers studied the effects of bourbon and vodka consumption on 95 heavy drinkers. While they found alcohol itself made most people feel poorly the following day, the study also found drinking dark beverages, like bourbon and red wine, makes for a worse hangover compared to drink lighter alcohol, such as vodka or gin.
The researchers believe the difference is due to chemicals called cogeners, which are created during the fermenting process. Bourbon has 37 times the amount of cogeners that clear vodka has.
The study was published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, March 2010.
