CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – US 23 northbound is reopened north of Circleville after a closure due to an overturned semi.
According to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, the single-vehicle accident occurred at about 4:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Officials said a Canadian woman hauling engines and transmissions from Ontario to a southern auto plant swerved to avoid hitting a deer and flipped the semi, spilling vehicle engines and transmissions along the roadway. The semi truck is also leaking fuel.
"There was some deer came out onto the roadway and she tried to avoid the deer and as a result lost control of her vehicle and the end result, you can see here at this point," said Pickaway Township Fire Chief Gary Black.
Fire personnel and emergency management are on the scene and the Environmental Protection Agency has been notified of the situation.
Both lanes of US 23 northbound were closed to traffic, but reopened at about 11:30 a.m. Delays were at a minimum as schools were out and many people were off work.
"Traffic seemed to be fairly light here this morning. We have diverted it onto (SR) 104, ODOT assisted in that matter," Black said.
The driver was taken to Berger Hospital with minor injuries.
The vehicle parts will be taken to the factory to see what's usable.
