COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A Columbus restaurant that specializes in serving customers who are native Africans celebrated those cultures while helping the needy during the holiday season.
Lisa Bannerman’s restaurant collected canned foods, clothing, and toiletries from their customers. The goods will be going to the Faith Mission. Those who stopped by to drop off items welcomed a thank-you gift----a free meal and African dance.
Bannerman says that the holiday spirit transcends national boundaries.
“Christmas is all about giving, so we wanted to help the homeless, those that are less fortunate. As Africans in America, we want to give back to those in America as well.”
Miriam Osei, from the Mimi for Christ organization, says there is poverty in America that many African immigrants don’t know about.
“When they come here, they assume this is a land of riches. We do reach out, but we sent the help back to Africa.”
This holiday season, the gifts stay in Columbus. The restaurant is called Drelyse African Restaurant, and the owner will continue the collection over the weekend.
