WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- With nearly 600,000 Americans who lost their jobs January, the recession is deepening and more than adults are worried about the problem. Stress from money problems is trickling down to children. School nurses are on the front lines when it comes to America’s kids and they report more children are having health problems related to the recession-stress they are feeling at home.
Val Thompson, school nurse for Westerville Schools, tells NBC 4’s Tacoma Newsome, “there are kids that cut, have severe depression, have some very troubling home lives and they bring all that to school.” Pay attention to some of these signs that may signal the red flag of depression in your child: appetite changes, eating more or less than normal; sleeping more or less than usual; if they find no joy in things they used to; talking about suicide or death; or using alcohol or drugs.
