REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio -- Nine families in a Reynoldsburg apartment complex were displaced from their homes after a second-story concrete walkway came crashing down Wednesday.
NBC 4 was at the scene and GOT ANSWERS.
As a construction crew prepared to fix a bowing concrete pathway at White Birch Crescent Apartments, the second-story walkway gave way and crashed to the ground below.
"There were some very lucky people, especially the guys that came in to shore up the concrete," Truro Township Fire Battalion Chief Allen Deaver said. "Luckily no one was underneath of it."
Some residents of the complex told NBC 4 they thought it was only a matter of time before the walkway collapsed, after informing management of concern about the unsteady pathway last October.
"(The management) said several times that they were going to send inspectors out to take a look at it," resident Michaelin Lowe said. "And when they did, they said there was nothing wrong with it."
The collapsed concrete blocked several apartments' doorways and created an unlivable environment for many of the residents.
"A firefighter opened our door and told us we had to evacuate for a couple days because our building was condemned," displaced tenant Marcella Moore told NBC 4.
The complex found six unoccupied units to move some of the displaced tenants into temporarily while crews work to remove the concrete and rebuild the walkway.
The Reynoldsburg structural engineers will decide if the apartment complex's landlord will be cited for the incident.
