Ohio Senator Remembers Mother's Activism

»  Comments | Post a Comment

MANSFIELD, Ohio -- Senator Sherrod Brown remembered his mother as a woman from a small Southern town who moved north as the young wife of a doctor to become a family matriarch and community activist. Brown's mother, Emily Campbell Brown, died on Feb. 2 at age 88. A funeral service was held Saturday in Mansfield.

Her three sons say she improved her community through work with the YWCA, Habitat for Humanity and Ohio Hunger Task Force. Visiting hours were held Friday evening, requiring Brown to make a quick trip to Washington afterward to cast the decisive vote on the $787 billion economic stimulus legislation. Governor Ted Strickland, Lt. Governor. Lee Fisher and Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner were among those who attended Saturday's church service.
